UNIT 5 REFLECTION:

In Unit 5 we learned about the Digestive System, Fuel Metabolism, Diabetes, Endocrine System and the Lymphatic System.

In the Digestive System I learned all the organs and basic functions that are all involved in the digestion of food. I also learned the passage way for food and how and where it goes after we eat it and how it is broken down, tell it comes out as waste.

In Fuel Metabolism I learned the central themes for fuel metabolism and that our body goes into 3 different stages after we eat food, the fed state, the fasting state, and the starvation state. It is never good for your body to go into the starvation state because your muscles rely on the adipose tissue for fuel. If you don't have a lot of fat of you, your body wont be able to last as long. We also learned how energy is extracted from the food we eat, and how it is broken down also into 3 different stages.

Diabetes is a serious thing that people can develop and is something that cannot be left untreated. Diabetes is when your body doesn't produce enough insulin (very important)

Endocrine system has to do with all the hormones in our body and how they are released. What they do for our body and why our body needs them to grow.

The lymphatic system has to do with our lymph nodes, lymph capillaries and lymph vessels. We also learned what a leaky gut was and how the lymcoytes are Tcells, Bcells, and NK.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM LAB

1.     In this activity we got some white string and 4 other colorful pieces of ribbon. The goal of this project was to make a measurement of your digestive tract. We had to measure how tall we were, our finger span, the span from our lip to the end of our jaw line. In the final product we should have ended with things long string that should be about the size of our digestive tract because everyone’s tract is different based on the measurements you got above.
DIGESTIVE ORGAN
COLOR and LENGTH (CM)
Mouth
RED 14.75
Esophagus
BLUE 47
Stomach
GREEN 18.5
Small Intestines
WHITE 619.76
Large Intestines
SHINNY BLUE 136
TOTAL
836.01

2.     The length of your digestive system is similar to your height but it’s just about 4x the size. I think the digestive system that I made would fit almost perfectly saying that I made the measurements properly.
3.     I think it would take about 3-4 hours for food to move completely through my digestive tract. When I looked online the average time it takes for food to move through someone’s digestive system is 6-8 hours. It varies on how much you eat. According to LIVESTRONG, the more fiber you eat it will move though your tract quicker, Caffeine tends to slow down your digestive system as well as some drugs whether it is prescription or not. Your food will also pass through your system quicker with physical activity.
4.     Digestion is different from absorption in that digestion is the breaking down of food where absorption is when the body absorbs nutrients. Absorption is in the small intestines, and digestion is in the stomach.

5.     Other questions I have about the digestive system are sometimes after we eat food and it doesn’t sit well with us we feel the urge to throw up. My question is what makes us throw up?

NEW YEARS'S GOALS FOR 2016!

Two goals I have for this semester and in my own life are:
  1. TESTS/Grades: I will  get better grades than i did last semester.Where i struggle most is with my tests, I keep put with my homework, classwork but I seem to have a hard time with testings. So my goal is I will to do better on my tests, not only for this class but all of my classes. I have never been a good test taken, and I want/need to learn how to become a better one. So my goal for this semester is to raise my test grades. In order to do this, I will want to try different study methods and find which one work best for me, as well as planning ahead and know when my tests are, so I can be better prepared. I think i also need to be better prepared for my test, which means start studying earlier than 2-3 days before the test. Ask my teaches when i need help, get my questions asked before the test or when i don't understand what is going on.
  2. Becoming more social: I will become for social with others. Its weird, i am very social at parties because i know lots of people but at school its a whole different experience. I struggle with the whole friends things, i have friends but not as many as i would like. I am a very independent person, so i want to take a bigger step and really get out there, meet new people. I will try hard to be more social and make those new friends, I think i just need to try harder and not be scared to ask people to join them at lunch or ask people in class if they want to hang out.
